Weathers gone

David Weathers was traded to the Milwakee Brewers for a player to be named later. Weathers said he was disappointed to leave his teamates but is excited to reunite with Todd Coffey and his old pitching coach. Weathers is also excited to have the chance to make the play offs.

Bengals Lose Reggie Kelly

Reggie Kelly will be out for at least 6 months after rupturing his Achilles tendon. Kelly was the starting Tight-end to be. The injury gives an opporitunity for Chase Coffman and Ben Utect to prove themselves step up in the Bengals offence.

Volquez to Possibly Miss Calendar Year

Volquez might miss a calendar year after having reconstructive elbow surgery to replace a torn ligament and repair damage in the elbow. Volquez is only 26 years of age and still has a long career ahead of him, but you hate to see a player of his caliber have these kind of set backs.

Pitching coach Dick Pole blames Volquez’s stint at the World Baseball Classic for possibly causing the injury. Volquez threw way over his scheduled 50 pitches in a start against the team of teammate Johnny Cueto.

Its good that Volquez had surgery now since the team is far from contention and there was no chance of Volquez pitching again soon. The question is if and when he can pitch next year.

Scott is A OK!

Scott Rolen dropped to the ground immediately after a pitch to the head by Jason Marquis. The shot to head literally rung around the stadium as you could hear it all the way from the upper deck seats on the third baseline.

Scott Rolen has gotten a spell of the Reds continual bad luck. Rolen is 0-6 since joining the Reds and after being drilled in the head he still did not get the opportunity to reach first base. Adam Rosales pitch ran for Rolen after he was struck in the head and left the game. Rolen commented, “I haven’t met Billy Hatcher yet!”

One thing that was nice to see is that Rolen got up okay after the help of Dusty Baker and a trainer. Rolen also made a gesture to the pitcher, Jason Marquis, that he was ok, as the two go way back and are family friends. Marquis said the pitch simply got away from him.

Scott Rolen left the game with a lump on his head and some dizziness but is said to be doing just fine. The event was horrifying to watch in person and looked much worse than the outcome. Rolen is very lucky he did not get more than just a lump on his head and some dizziness.

Rolen has been out of the lineup since being struck in the head but since has had a CT scan of his head and the results are normal. The Reds had the scan taken as a precaution.

Reds sign RHP Kip Wells

Kip was was designated for assigment by the Nationals then picked up and signed by the Cincinnati Reds. Kip Wells was brought to the Reds to pitch in the bullpen but it looks as he might be penciled in at the fifth starter spot once occupied by Justin Lehr. Kip was a reliever for Washington this year and was 0-2 with a 6.49 ERA before being picked up by the Reds. Prior to playing for Washington, Kip Wells had major league stints with Colorado, KC, and St. Louis.

Volquez to have surgery

Edison Volquez is scheduled to have surgery on his right elbow after failing to get past 20 of his scheduled 80 simulated pitches in a rehab stint.

No one is sure if Volquez will have Tommy John surgery on Monday or what procedure will follow but what we do know is that Volquez was in noticeable pain after his rehab stint and was grabbing at the right elbow. Edison Volquez has started in just 9 games this season for the Reds after an amazing first season with the reds, goin 17 – 6 and selected was as an all- star.

The Reds have really missed Volquez and have had to use more “number 5″ starters than normal. The Reds have used Micah Owings, Homer Bailey, and Justin Lehr in his absence.

Reds Aquire 3B Scott Rolen

Just before the trade deadline Friday night, the Reds finalized a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays bring Scott Rolen to Cincinnati.

Cincinnati also received cash in the deal but gave up 3B Edwin Encarnacion, Josh Roenicke, and minor leauger Zach Stewart.

Scott Rolen was batting .320 with 8 HRs and 43 RBIs in 338 plate appearances. Rolen has been on Reds GM Walt Jocketty’s radar since joing the club. Rolen in addition to surring up the 3rd base position and adding another powerful bat to the line up, will bring strong leadership to a very young team.

Edwin Encarnacion was batting .209 with 5 HRs and 16 RBIs in 139 ABs. Edwin has struggled this season with injuries as well as a the plate. Edwin has been know as a very inconsistent 3B defensively as well as at the plate. The Reds have always counted on a break out from year Edwin but finally traded him away.

Josh Roenicke was the closer in the Reds AAA organization before joining the reds following injuries to Jared Burton and Mike Lincoln. Roenicke posted a 2.27 ERA with a 1.27 WHIP with 14 Ks in only 13.1 inning with the Reds.

Zach Stewart was the reds 2008 third round selection and rose through the ranks of the Reds Farm System very quickly. Stewart was a right handed reliever with good command averaging in the upper to mid 90s FB in addition to his above average slider.

I look forward to seeing Scott Rolen play Saturday and finally seeing the much needed departure of Edwin Encarnacion.

Jerry Hairston Jr. now a Yankee

The Reds have traded INF Jerry Hairston Jr. to the New York Yankees for 20 Yr old minor league catcher Chase Weems.

The Yankees were looking to add a utility player to their bench after a string of injuries this season. Jerry Hairston Jr. is just that, a utility player, as he has played six different positions this year including, 2nd, 3rd, SS and all three outfield positions.

Hairston was batting .254 with 8 HRs 27 RBIs and 7 SBs in 307 plate appearances.

Chase Weems was selected in the 6th round of the 2007 Draft and has been playing single A ball in Charleston. Weems was batting .260 with 1 HR and 14 RBIs in 174 plate appearances.

Arroyo on 03′ PED list?

Bronson Arroyo was mentioned in Friday’s Boston Herald, for admittedly have taken androstenedione and amphetamines and that he “wouldn’t be surprised” if his name were to show up on the 03′ Performance Enhancing Drug testing list.

As of 2004 androstenedione was banned from use from the MLB and amphetamines were added to this list shortly after, in 2006.

The 03′ PED testing list was supposed to be a secret “survey” of players to see who was taking what substances at that time. It is said to have listed 103 names of individuals whom tested positive for PEDs. This is just one day after Bronson Arroyo’s 03′ – 05′ teammates David Ortiz aka Big Papi and Manny Ramirez were said to have been on the list according to The New York Times.

Arroyo was quoted as saying, “Before 2004, none of us paid attention to what we took… That’s why i said anybody could be on the list. Back then nobody knew what was in the stuff, because the FDA wasn’t regulating all of it.” Arroyo was also quoted as saying, “I’d take anything I can get from a nutrition store, if you tell me it would make me better on the field.”

Now, I’m not saying Arroyo would have been traded if he hadn’t had said this, but I am saying couldn’t have Arroyo at least waited until after the 4:00 trade deadline?

Was this a good or a bad idea for the Reds and Bronson Arroyo’s career and image?
